Title: Number theory and nuclear physics

Abstract:

I will discuss the unexpected link between the distribution of zeros of L-functions and that of eigenvalues of large matrices, which were first introduced to understand energy levels of large nuclei. Starting with an introduction to the zeta function and its zeros, I will proceed with some basic facts about random matrix theory. I will end with some recent research results in the Katz-Sarnak theory of low-lying zeros of families of L-functions.
